The basics

What family therapy is for

Families often come in when one person is struggling: a child who is acting out or pulling away, a teen who seems overwhelmed, or parents who cannot get on the same page. Families also come in after a loss, a divorce, a move, a new stepfamily, or a painful experience that touched everyone.

Family therapy looks at the whole system, not only the person who seems to be having the hardest time. When the family understands the pattern it gets caught in, everyone has more room to change, and the person carrying the most usually gets some relief.

What to expect

How the work usually unfolds

LISTENING

Hearing from everyone

Your therapist makes room for each person to be heard, including children and teens, in a way that fits their age.

THE PATTERN

Seeing what repeats

Together you notice the cycles that play out at home, so they become something the family faces together.

FLEXIBLE SESSIONS

The right people in the room

Some sessions may include the whole family, some just parents, and some one family member. Your therapist plans this with you.

AT HOME

Trying something new

Families practice new ways of talking, setting limits, and repairing after conflict, then bring back what happened.

The research

What the research says

THE EVIDENCE BASE

Strong support for involving the family

A 2024 review brought together meta-analyses and systematic reviews of family therapy and other family-based approaches, such as parent training, for problems where a child or teen is the main concern. It found a substantial evidence base for sleep and feeding problems in infancy, recovery from abuse and neglect, behavior problems, anxiety and low mood, eating disorders, physical health problems, and psychosis.

Worth knowing: this is a summary of other studies, and many of the programs it covers combine family work with other kinds of help.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the whole family have to come every time?

No. Your therapist will plan with you who should be in each session. Some sessions include everyone, and some include only part of the family.

What if one family member will not come?

You can still begin. Change in part of a family often helps the rest of it, and others may choose to join later.

Is family therapy only for families with young children?

No. Family therapy can help families with teens, adult children, and extended or blended families too.

Does insurance cover family therapy at Beyond Healing Center?

Most of our counselors operate on a self-pay basis. A small number of our clinicians are in-network with Cox HealthPlans, and we can provide a superbill if you have out-of-network benefits. See our insurance and payment page for details.
