How we see you

What counseling looks like here

People come to counseling for many reasons: anxiety that will not settle, a low mood that lingers, grief, a relationship under strain, or painful experiences that still shape the present. Some come without a clear name for what is wrong. All of that is a reasonable place to start.

PEOPLE FIRST

You are more than a diagnosis

We see each person as complex, capable, and shaped by experience. A diagnosis can be a helpful map, but it never defines who you are.

FORWARD MOVEMENT

Progress, not perfection

Our job is not to fix you. It is to support you in moving toward the life you want. Progress can be gradual, uneven, or quiet, and all of it counts.

THOROUGHNESS

Understanding before speed

We slow down where it matters. Getting to know you well comes before rushing toward a plan.

ONE TEAM

Care that fits together

If you also see Beyond Healing Psychiatry, your therapist and your psychiatric provider can work together when you want that, so your care feels like one story.

Our internship program also includes counselors in training. Rates vary by provider level.

We see children, teens, and adults. All of our clinicians can see clients by telehealth.

The research

What the research says about counseling

Decades of research show that counseling helps. Two findings shape how we work: the relationship with your therapist matters a great deal, and therapy and medication can work well together. Both studies below are free to read.

THE RELATIONSHIP

The relationship is part of the treatment

A leading psychotherapy researcher reviewed the meta-analytic evidence on what makes therapy work. The strength of the working relationship, the therapist’s empathy, your expectations for therapy, and care adapted to your culture all showed up as important. Differences between therapists mattered too.

Worth knowing: this is a review of other studies, written from the common factors point of view, which some researchers weigh differently.

THERAPY AND MEDICATION

For depression, therapy and medication together did best

Researchers pooled 101 trials with nearly 12,000 adults with depression. Therapy alone and medication alone worked about equally well. Combining them worked better than either one, and people were less likely to drop out of therapy than out of medication-only treatment.

Worth knowing: most people in these studies had moderate to severe depression, and the authors call for more research on long-term effects.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which therapist is right for me?

You can read our clinicians’ bios on the team page, or call us and we will help you find a good fit. The relationship matters, so if the first match does not feel right, tell us.

Do you see children and teens?

Yes. We work with children, teens, and adults, and some of our clinicians focus on younger clients. Play therapy is one way we support children.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes. All of our clinicians can see clients by telehealth, and many also see clients in person in Springfield. Tell us which you would prefer and we will match you with someone who has openings.

What happens in the first session?

Mostly, you and your therapist get to know each other. You talk about what brings you in and what you want to be different, and you decide together how to begin.

Does insurance cover counseling at Beyond Healing Center?

Most of our counselors operate on a self-pay basis. A small number of our clinicians are in-network with Cox HealthPlans, and we can provide a superbill if you have out-of-network benefits. See our insurance and payment page for details.

What if I also want help with medication?

Medication support is available through Beyond Healing Psychiatry, which has its own intake, its own insurance list, and its own phone line: (417) 641-2406.
